In over 10 years of practicing Trade Mark Law in Nigeria, we have encountered this question at least once or twice a week from both local and international owners of trade and service marks seeking protection under the laws of industrial property, in particular trademark law.

One might ask:

What is a service mark? Why should it be protected in Nigeria? Who will benefit from the protection?
