Legacy

S.A. Shitta-Bey & Co, Jabita Chambers, was founded in 1968 by Sikiru Ayodeji Shitta-Bey (1931 to 2010), renowned Lawyer and distinguished Lawmaker.

Sikiru Shitta-Bey was called to the English Bar in 1960 as a member of Lincoln’s Inn and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1962. Among numerous landmark and celebrated cases he was involved in was the treasonable felony trial of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and 26 others. As Counsel alongside late Pa Adewale Thompson and Chief Bola Ige, Sikiru Shitta-Bey succeeded in calling the attention of the whole nation to the injustice being meted out to Chief Awolowo as reported on the front pages of newspapers of the day.

As a Federal Law Maker (member of parliament representing Lagos North Central Federal Constituency), Sikiru Shitta-Bey in his maiden speech to parliament in 1965, called for the creation of Lagos State promising that if created Lagos State will be the most viable and prosperous state in the land; a prophetic statement that turned a reality.

As Senator of the Federal Republic representing Lagos Central Senatorial District in 1979, he championed special status recognition for Lagos. In this, he secured special and additional budgetary allocation of N20 Million per annum in 1981 to assist Lagos deal with the peculiar urban and environmental challenges which arose from her status as the nations federal capital (now Abuja) and commercial nerve centre.

As Lawyer and Lawmaker, Sikiru Shitta-Bey’s legacy was one of championing the cause of the downtrodden. He believed that the God given resources and talent a man is blessed with are not merely for the individual but for the greater good of the people. His was a mission to serve and not be served and is fondly remembered for this by friends, colleagues and even adversaries, who no doubt found him a worthy opponent.

Sikiru Ayodeji Shitta-Bey, awarded Officer of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (OFR) in 2003, remains in our hearts as his legacy of service and integrity continues to inspire us and many in the discharge of duty to the administration of justice.
